Benitez supports reimposition of death penalty

THIRD District Representative Alfredo Benitez of Negros Occidental expressed support to the reimposition of the death penalty.
Benitez, however, said that death penalty should cover only heinous crimes or crimes that are beyond the normal human mind.
“This needs further study because death penalty should only cover heinous crime. Death penalty itself does not kill. It depends upon every individual if they can afford (to lose) their lives in committing the crime,” Benitez told reporters at the sidelines of the gathering for his 50th birthday at the Victorias City Coliseum on Tuesday.
There is an inconclusive study that death penalty can deter crimes but definitely people will have to think deeply before committing the crime, he added. House Bill 1, also known as the Death Penalty bill, identifies the heinous crimes for which the death penalty will be imposed, including trafficking in illegal drugs, arson, treason, murder, rape, kidnapping, and carnapping. The mode of capital punishment could either be through hanging, by firing squad or lethal injection.
The imposition of death penalty has been suspended since 2006 with the
enactment of Republic Act No. 9346, or “An Act Prohibiting the Imposition of
Death Penalty in the Philippines.” (TDE)
