Prominent Silay family donates lot for educational advancement

THE Pablo Jison family of Silay City, headed by matriarch Elisa, donated a three-hectare property in a premier village in Barangay E. Lopez for the expansion initiatives of the Philippine Women's University (PWU) owned and run by the Benitez family, under the presidency of Dr. Jose Francisco “Kiko” Benitez, who is running for congressman of the third district of Negros Occidental.

The donor, Elisa Jison, and PWU president Kiko, signed the deed of donation as witnessed by Representative Alfredo Abelardo "Albee" Benitez (3rd district, Negros Occidental), Silay City Mayor Mark Andrew Golez, the Jison family, and the board of trustees and executives of PWU. 

Yolanda victims in E.B. Magalona town get 1,168 housing units

A TOTAL of 1,168 permanent housing units located in Tumandok Village, Barangay Santo Niño, E.B. Magalona town were turned over on Monday, February 25, by the National Housing Authority (NHA) to the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

E.B. Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon, at the sidelines of the turnover rites, said an initial 150 families, forming part of the first batch of beneficiaries and whose respective homes were destroyed by the typhoon in 2013, may now occupy the houses at the relocation site. 

Lawmaker lauds creation of Department of Human Settlements, Urban Development

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has lauded the signing of Republic Act (RA) 11201, creating the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

Signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on February 14, the law created the department through the consolidation of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) and the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB). 

Visayan Bloc backs initiatives to strengthen sugar industry

THE Visayan Bloc in the House of Representatives said it is supporting any government initiatives that will only strengthen the local sugar industry and enhance competitiveness through appropriate regulation.

In a statement Thursday, February 14, the Bloc led by Negros Occidental Alfredo Benitez said there is a proposal by certain economic managers to liberalize the sugar industry through deregulation of sugar imports that will, among others, allow the direct importation by any sugar user.

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez said the Visayan Bloc in the House of Representatives will come out with an official stand against the proposed sugar liberalization.

Benitez, the leader of the bloc, said he already got the assurance of former special assistant to the president Christopher Lawrence Go that the proposal would be studied well and that he will support whatever is good for the greater number. 

‘Crime liability age measure aims to reform minor offender’

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said on Wednesday, January 23, that the measure being tackled by the House committee on justice is not meant to jail a minor offender but to bring him or her to a training center for rehabilitation or reformation.

He said the measure was triggered by the reports received by President Rodrigo Duterte that there were seven-year-old children who were used to push illegal drugs and there was also a 14-year-old who was brave to say he will continue engaging in thievery because he will only be jailed at 15 when he gets caught. 

Household electrification program for 3rd District on track

LIGHTS for 602 households with no electricity in far-flung areas in the Third District of Negros Occidental will soon be a reality under the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Household Electrification Program (HEP).

In a recent coordination meeting in Victorias City facilitated by the Office of Congressman Alfredo Benitez, Jimmy Planas of DOE briefed the participants of the status of the ongoing implementation and prepared the household beneficiaries to comply with requirements to avail of the home-based solar system kit. 

Pag-Ibig CEO backs creation of human settlement departm

PAG-IBIG Fund chief executive officer (CEO) Acmad Rizaldy Moti is supporting the move to create the Department of Settlement and Urban Development to address the housing problem in the country.

Moti said the creation of the new department will soon become a law. 

The bill in the House is authored by Negros Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez while its counterpart bill at the Senate was authored by Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito.
