Dev’t of Negrense-backed theme park in Silay City takes off

SILAY CITY – The P600-million theme park called Magic Island that will soon rise in this northern Negros Occidental city is positioned to steer economic development for the province, particularly in tourism.

Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez, the prime mover of the project situated in Barangay Guinhalaran, said the dream of having a catalyst for growth in the province’s tourism industry is now a reality.

Lawmaker: ‘Postponement of brgy. polls 90% likely’

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez Sunday, April 2, said the postponement of the barangay elections set in October is 90 percent likely.

The issue on who will appoint the new set of barangay officials will take a little bit of discussion, he said.

“There are several groups that don’t feel easy about appointing public officials. The first question is who will appoint? If the president will appoint, he doesn't know all the barangay officials so he will need recommendations and who will do that,” Benitez said.

Benitez seeks probe on takeover of gov’t housing units

NEGROS Occidental Representative Alfredo Benitez (3rd District), chairman of House committee on housing, is pushing for an investigation into the takeover of government housing units in Pandi and San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan by members of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay).

Benitez cited a report of the Philippine National Police that around 500 individuals who are members of the urban poor group marched to government housing sites and occupied the housing units on March 8.

Negrense solons split on death penalty

LAWMAKERS in Negros Occidental are divided on the proposed restoration of death penalty. On Wednesday, majority members of the House of Representatives approved on second reading the proposed measure to impose capital punishment on drug-related offenses in the country.

Some of the Negrense legislators who voted “yes” were Representatives Melecio Yap Jr. (First District) and Alfredo Benitez (Third District) while against the measure was Juliet Ferrer (Fourth District).
