House panel okays redistribution of government housing units

After the failed implementation of one of the biggest housing programs of the government, the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development has authorized the redistribution of thousands of housing units intended for soldiers and policemen.

This, after the housing committee has endorsed for plenary approval a measure authorizing the National Housing Authority (NHA) to distribute the unoccupied and unawarded government housing units to other qualified beneficiaries.

Rep. Alfredo Benitez of Negros Occidental, the panel chairman, said House Joint Resolution 11 was unanimously approved last week by members of his committee. The Senate version of the measure is still pending for approval.

House bloc seeks oil price spike safeguard in tax bill

The House of Representatives’ 42-man Visayan bloc wants to include a provision in the Duterte administration’s tax-reform package suspending automatically the excise taxes on petroleum once crude oil hover around the $80-per-barrel mark.

In an interview with reporters, PDP-Laban Rep. Alfredo Benitez of Negros Occidental, head of the Visayan bloc, said automatic suspension of excise taxes on petroleum is needed to safeguard Filipino consumers.

‘Private sector must help govt solve housing mess

The chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development said the government should now tap the help of private sector in addressing the country’s housing problems.

Rep. Alfredo B. Benitez of PDP-Laban Party-list said the government alone cannot solve the worsening housing problems of the Philippines.

Benitez noted that there are idle lands or properties which could be used as sites for government and private-sector socialized housing programs.
