Zubiri to Fight High Excise Taxes

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri on Friday promised sugar industry stakeholders to fight for the reduction of the P10-a-liter excise tax on sugar-sweetened drinks.

But, I am only one vote in the Senate, Zubiri said as he asked sugar industry leaders to lobby for support from the rest of the members of the Senate.

He pointed out that the need for the support of Senator Juan Edgardo Angara, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and is sympathetic to the sugar industry.

Talisay Scores Multiple Wins in 3rd Albee Cup

The Talisay Team in the 3rd Albee Cup Inter-LGU Sportsfest scored multiple wins over the other LGU groups in the second week of the basketball and volleyball games.

In the basketball matches for 39 below category, Talisay won over Victorias last June 3; and beat Silay in the June 4 schedule. Talisay also beat Murcia (June 3) and EB Magalona (June 4) in the 40 above basketball games.

A total of 150 schoolchildren of the Estado Elementary School-Hacienda Mimi Extension, in Barangay 10 – Barrio Estado, Victorias City were beneficiaries of free immunization for influenza, a project of Victoriahanon Mrs. Victoria Bantug Hoffart together with the Victorias Kaayong Lawas Foundation and the Immaculate Conception Health Center to commemorate the 98th birth anniversary of former Victorias Mayor Remedios Palanca Bantug.

Albee Cup Inter-LGU Sportsfest Opens

Elected officials of the Third District, from mayors, vice-mayors, councilors, barangay captains and barangay councilmen saw action over the weekend as the 3rd ALBEE CUP Inter-LGU Sportsfest opened at the Silay City Natalio G. Velez Sports and Cultural Center.

Congressman Alfredo Benitez, seeing the opportunity to foster stronger camaraderie among public officials in his District and at the same time, promote physical fitness and well-being, launched the sportsfest in 2014.

Negros, Bacolod Councils Oppose Sugar Excise Tax

Local legislators in both Negros Occidental and its capital Bacolod City passed resolutions last week expressing opposition to the proposed excise tax on beverages, sweetened by using locally-produced sugar.

On Wednesday, the SP of Negros Occidental unanimously approved a resolution urging lawmakers to reduce the proposed excise tax on sugar sweetened beverages from P10 to P5 per liter, in support of the stand of the Visayan-bloc House representatives.

‘No to Sugar Excise Tax’

The Sugar Alliance of the Philippines (SAP) expressed opposition to the proposed excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages claiming that it “will further bring the sugar industry down.”

Lawyer Emilo Yulo, spokesperson of SAP, said the proposal is a “double whammy as far as we are concerned. We have sent representations to both Houses of Congress to hear appeal.”

‘Partial Victory For Sugar Industry’

The sugar industry has scored a partial victory with the withdrawal of beverage giant Coca Cola-FEMSA of the injunction case it filed against key government officials, Atty. Emilio Yulo, spokesperson of the Sugar Alliance of the Philippines said yesterday.

Yulo said for now there is no threat to the constitutionality of sugar order no.3 Atty. Mark Kok representative of Coke during yesterday’s inquiry on the importation of high fructose corn syrup of the House Committee on Agriculture said that the company has already ordered its lawyers to withdraw the case in the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

North Negros Brigada Kicks-off Today

Negros Occ. Third District Rep. Alfredo B. Benitez and Talisay City Mayor Neil Lizares will grace the launching of the Brigada 2017 Eskwela at Inocencio V. Ferrer Memorial School of Fisheries, Talisay City, today, May 15.

Administrative Officer Romeo Sanchez said the school will host the kick-off ceremony in the northern area of the province to be participated in by all the Northern Negros Occidental area school representatives and stakeholders.
