Benitez asks NHA to nullify transfer of housing units

The chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development has asked the National Housing Authority to declare null and void thousands of transactions for the transfer of housing units and lots sold by original beneficiaries of government socialized housing programs.

The call is embodied in House Resolution 1906 that Negros Occidental Rep. Albee Benitez filed in order to put an end to housing’s the boom and bust situation blamed mostly to so-called “professional urban poor community settlers”.

MANILA- The National Housing Authority (NHA) will redesign the controversial houses on stilts for the refugees of the 2013 Zamboanga siege.

NHA General Manager Marcelino Escalada made the statement on Tuesday during an inquiry of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Urban Development on the collapse of a footbridge in the city last month.

The National Housing Authority (NHA) has suspended 20 contractors and placed under preventive suspension a number of its executives and employees in connection with the on-going investigation into irregularities that attended the housing projects for victims of supertyphoon Yolanda and the Zamboanga City siege of 2013.

But Negros Oriental Rep. Albee Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development said the action taken by General Manager Marcelino Escalada only deserves“half commendation.” The other half, Benitez said will come when the culprits are criminally charged and blacklisted from all government housing projects.

The chairperson of the House of Representatives’ committee on housing and urban development has recommended to the National Housing Authority the suspension of more construction firms involved in government housing projects in connection with the congressional investigation into the collapse of a wooden bridge leading to stilt houses for the victims of the Zamboanga siege in 2013.

Negros Oriental Rep. Albee Benitez, the panel chairperson, said general manager Marcelino Escalada deserves “half commendation” for the effort to run after erring contractors, and at the same time, hold them accountable by filing criminal charges and have them blacklisted from all government housing projects.

Benitez points to design failure in Zambo stilt housing project

There seems to be a failure in design and safety considerations in the the Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and reconstruction (Z3R) housing project, but officials of the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were pointing at each other, a lawmaker said at a House inquiry on Tuesday.

At the House hearing into the February 2018 collapse of a housing unit in the Z3R housing project, Rep. Albee Benitez, chair of the House committee on housing and urban development, lamented the apparent downgrading of the quality of materials used in the P53-million housing project for some 240 families affected by the city siege by fighters of the Moro National Liberation Front.

NHA: Talisay housing units of ‘high quality’

BACOLOD City – The National Housing Authority (NHA) assured the good quality of the 1,000 duplex housing units at the Vista Alegre Homes in Barangay Dos Hermanas, Talisay City, Negros Occidental.

The 15-hectare community will house families of soldiers, police officers and other uniformed personnel in Negros Occidental.

NHA general manager Marcelino Escalada Jr. said the housing units are of “high quality” and not “substandard.”

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The National Housing Authority (NHA) will investigate the complaints regarding the housing projects for Yolanda victims in Negros Occidental.

NHA general manager Marcelino Escalada said on Sunday that he ordered his men to look into the complaints of Yolanda housing beneficiaries and local officials in areas where the projects are located.

Some local officials are reportedly hesitant to accept the turnover of the housing units due to lack of basic services such as water and power.

A senior administration lawmaker on Friday demanded the immediate implementation of a congressional initiative allowing informal settlers to be beneficiaries of 55,000 unoccupied housing units intended for men and women in uniform, saying that this will save the houses from deterioration.

Admin awards AFP/PNP houses to poor

More than P20 billion worth of government-built housing units for personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and Bureau of Corrections which were not occupied since 2011 will be awarded to qualified beneficiaries, according to a Joint Resolution signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The President has approved the congressional resolution authorizing the National Housing Authority to award unoccupied housing units to other qualified beneficiaries.

Also covered by the joint resolution were units whose ownership and possession are surrendered by awardees and respective awards were cancelled.

The resolution cited that the Department of Budget and Management released a total of P20.779 billion for the implementation of the AFP/PNP/BFP/BJMP/BuCor Housing projects with a target of 74,195 housing units.
