One of the infrastructure projects in the government’s “Build, build, build” program which is certain to bring great relief to commuters and travelers is the North-South Railway Project. The South line consists of a 68-kilometer commuter line that will run between Tutuban in Manila and Los Baños in Laguna and a 595-km long-haul line, between Tutuban and Matnog in Sorsogon, that will carry freight and cargo aside from passengers.  The rail reconstruction project will be implemented by the Philippine National Railways and financed through loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (commuter line) and China (long-haul line).

After nearly three decades of futile bid to enact a bill establishing a Department of Housing and Urban Development, the House of Representatives has finally come up with what is considered the finest version of the many bills filed since 1989 for the creation of a government department that would address the worsening housing problem in the country.

Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, made this assurance as the Lower House launched Tuesday night the plenary debates for House Bill 6775 that consolidated five legislative proposals for the creation of the DHUD.

MANILA, Philippines — The chorus of tiny voices of a dozen children donned in colorful shirts rang inside the provincial capitol one afternoon.

They were singing Awit sa Marawi, a local composition by a Grade 5 student about the futility of wars and hopes for rebuilding. The singing became more spirited as a senator and foreign guests arrived. When the choir finished, the guests joined them and posed for photographs.
