Solons laud PRRD for signing Department of Human Settlements Act

MANILA --Two lawmakers at the House of Representatives on Tuesday lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for signing into law Republic Act 11201, or the measure creating the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Kabayan party-list Rep. Ron Salo and Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez, the chair of the House Committee on Housing and urban Development, both thanked the President for prioritizing the bill that would address not only the many problems in the public housing sector but also improve Filipinos' quality of life.

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has lauded the signing of Republic Act (RA) 11201, creating the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

Signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on February 14, the law created the department through the consolidation of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) and the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB). 

300 families in Silay City get ‘Yolanda’ housing units

BACOLOD CITY -- A total of 300 families affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda in Silay City, Negros Occidental have received permanent housing units from the National Housing Authority (NHA) at the relocation site in Barangay E. Lopez.

The development was announced on Wednesday by the Office of Third District Rep. Alfredo Benitez, which is facilitating and coordinating the implementation of the housing project.

The 300 houses are part of the 1,992 housing units allocated for Silay City.

NHA-Bacolod manager Alejandro Ongsuco turned over to Mayor Mark Golez a miniature replica of the “Yolanda” housing unit during the ceremony held on Monday.

Visayan Bloc backs sugar industry battle

The Visayan Bloc in the House of Representatives yesterday pledged its support tothe call of the sugar industry stakeholders for a review of the proposed import liberalization of sugar by the country’s economic managers.

The move could lead to the collapse of the sugar industry, the Visayan Bloc congressmen said in a joint statement released by Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District).

The Visayan Bloc members said they will support any government initiatives that will strengthen the local sugar industry and enhance competitiveness through appropriate regulation.

THE Visayan Bloc in the House of Representatives said it is supporting any government initiatives that will only strengthen the local sugar industry and enhance competitiveness through appropriate regulation.

In a statement Thursday, February 14, the Bloc led by Negros Occidental Alfredo Benitez said there is a proposal by certain economic managers to liberalize the sugar industry through deregulation of sugar imports that will, among others, allow the direct importation by any sugar user.

A deluge of housing problems involving some 5,000 of urban poor families in Manila has prompted Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Friday to convene the Oversight Committee on Housing to swiftly address the issues.

Arroyo has asked Negros Occidental Rep. Albee Benitez to convene the panel to facilitate the awarding of titles to the urban poor beneficiaries in Parola, both in Binondo and Tondo, Manila.

‘Crime liability age measure aims to reform minor offender’

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said on Wednesday, January 23, that the measure being tackled by the House committee on justice is not meant to jail a minor offender but to bring him or her to a training center for rehabilitation or reformation.

He said the measure was triggered by the reports received by President Rodrigo Duterte that there were seven-year-old children who were used to push illegal drugs and there was also a 14-year-old who was brave to say he will continue engaging in thievery because he will only be jailed at 15 when he gets caught.
