Yolanda anomalies deplored; BOC irregularities to be checked

Concerned congressmen have deplored multi-million peso irregularities in the implementation of the housing project for victims of super-typhoon “Yolanda,” and recommended the fiing of criminal charges against public officials and contractors involved.

Materials used were substandard and their style is “bulok.”

The chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development yesterday asked the National Housing Authority (NHA) to explain why it failed to address anomalies in the construction of houses for super -typhoon ‘Yolanda’ victims notwithstanding the agency’s snail-paced delivery of completed housing units.

Citing a Commission on Audit (COA) report, Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez disclosed that the NHA accomplishment record in delivering housing units for ‘Yolanda’ victims and other resettlement program for informal settler families has been dismal.

A party-list lawmaker on Monday asked the Commission on Audit (COA) to conduct a special audit on all housing projects under the Yolanda rehabilitation and recovery program.

This, after the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, chaired by Rep. Alfredo B. Benitez of the Third District of Negros Occidental, uncovered an alleged substandard construction of Yolanda housing projects during the two-day inquiry of the panel in Tacloban City on August 31 and September 1.

Tacloban City – The House of Representatives committee on housing and urban development is eyeing criminal charges against individuals and officials involved in the anomalous implementation of various housing projects intended for victims of super- typhoon Yolanda in Eastern Visayas.

Rep. Albee Benitez, House committee chairman, the results of the investigation on the supposed housing project anomalies, wherein substandard materials were allegedly used, will be forwarded to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Cong. Albee Reports on Housing Initiatives to Negros, Panay Lions


Negros Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez rallied Lions Clubs International District 301-B1 of Negros and Panay to “get our acts together” in addressing problems of urbanization.

House committee uncovers anomalies in shelter project for ‘Yolanda’ victims

Borongan, Eastern Samar – A senior administration congressman yesterday deplored multi-million peso irregularities in the implementation of the shelter project for victims of super-typhoon “Yolanda,” noting that the housing units were built using substandard construction materials.

Hundreds of government-funded housing units for Yolanda victims will have to be inspected after contractors who won the heavily-financed shelter project have reportedly tapped unqualified sub-contractors to do their job, Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez revealed.
